Daniel Levy makes Jose Mourinho decision as Tottenham plot summer transfer for RB Leipzig star

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest on Monday, February 22.

Tottenham could make move for RB Leipzig star

According to Sport BILD, via TEAMtalk, Spurs are one of the frontrunners to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

The 26-year-old has scored six goals in all competitions and registered half a dozen assists as well for the Bundesliga side this season.

The Austrian international has previously appeared to suggest he would like to play in the Premier League.

In 2020, he said: "I have been able to play in England a few times, including with the national team. I was thrilled by the atmosphere in the stadium.

TOTTENHAM BOSS JOSE MOURINHO INSISTS HIS COACHING METHODS ARE SECOND TO NONE

"How the spectators read the game and celebrate the individual scenes, the fans really know about football.

"There was sometimes a tackle celebrated, sometimes a diagonal ball. I like to watch the Premier League and imagine that playing there is fun."

And Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche has, perhaps, added fuel to the fire on a potential move.

“[Sabitzer] has made a great development. It goes without saying that other clubs also notice this," he said.

He is valued at £37.8million on Transfermarkt.

Jose Mourinho tipped for the sack

Paddy Power is currently offering odds of 11/4 for head coach Jose Mourinho to be sacked from his current role following Spurs' 2-1 loss to rivals West Ham United.

The result means Tottenham have won just one of their last six Premier League games and they sit in ninth at the time of writing, whereas West Ham are up to fourth.

Their run to the top of the table back in December must feel like a distant memory to the club's increasingly disgruntled supporters.

However, ESPN claimed his future will only be decided at the end of the season.

The report claims chairman Daniel Levy plans to hold off until May before determining his fate.

It adds that the exorbitant cost Tottenham would have to pay to sack Mourinho, along with their Carabao Cup final appearance in April, has given the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss more time to keep his job.

The Daily Mail reported this week that the cost of axing him would prove prohibitive - and ESPN believes the figure would be around £30m.

His deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs out in the summer of 2023, with no break clause included.

'We should be in a better position'

Mourinho delivered a cryptic message after the defeat to the Hammers.

The Spurs boss claimed an element of his side's plight is out of his control as there are problems at the club that he cannot fix by himself.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the defeat at the London Stadium, Mourinho said: "I feel that we are not in the position in relation to our potential.

“Even if I think for a long, long time that we have problems in the team that I cannot resolve by myself as a coach.

"Our potential is higher than where we are so of course there is frustration. We should be in a better position.”

It is difficult to decipher what this means. Either way, things are far from rosy at Spurs.
