Daniel Levy handed Tottenham summer priority after manager blow amid worrying Harry Kane claim

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been told by former defender William Gallas he must appoint the perfect sporting director to take Spurs into their next era. Previous managing director Fabio Paratici left the club on April 21 in the midst of appealing his 30-month footballing ban after it was placed in effect worldwide and not just in Italy.

While FIFA have 'partially accepted' Paratici's appeal against the ban, he will not be allowed to negotiate contracts with players or agents, or attend league meetings - something that would seriously restrict his role.

A new head coach also needs to be appointed, but a final decision being confirmed appears far away with frontrunner Arne Slot no longer in the running. In a Thursday morning press conference, Slot has been quoted in AD saying: “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other clubs' interest in me. Although I am thankful, my wish is to stay at Feyenoord and continue working on what we created last year.

“There is not - and there has not been - transfer conversation and yesterday’s meeting was exclusively for an extension. All talks with the club have always been only in that sense. I'm looking forward to next season with Feyenoord.”

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has since emerged as a favourite for the role after another title win in Scotland, however there is one decision that is the overwhelming priority. To bring in the correct manager, a new sporting director is needed first and Gallas has stressed to Levy just how important that decision will be.

Speaking to Genting Casino, he said: "To sign the very best players, Tottenham need to have the right scouting set-up. They need a new Sporting Director to come in. They need someone in there who leads the recruitment strategy who can bring in these players - signing players isn’t enough.

"Some of the players that I’ve seen at the club simply do not have the quality to play for a club like Tottenham. Perhaps the recruitment at the club over the last few years hasn’t been good enough. Getting the right Sporting Director is just as crucial as appointing the right manager this summer."

On the director short list is understood to be Roma's Tiago Pinto and ex-Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Tim Steidten along with another unknown name.

On Tottenham's disappointing 2022/23 season, Gallas added: "Tottenham have the best facilities. I’ve played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham – Tottenham’s facilities are the best out of the three clubs! They have everything better than any other London club, but at the end, they are always in a position where they are not winning anything.

"They even have had the best striker in Harry Kane. If you look at Kane’s goals this season, he’s scored 28 goals! Come on, you have to give him so much credit when you look at the players he has behind him."
