Daniel Levy and Tottenham handed January transfer windfall after FIFA World Cup decision

Daniel Levy and Tottenham are to receive a welcome financial boost from FIFA ahead of the January transfer window. As the 2022 World Cup is currently in full swing, FIFA are to reward clubs for their help with releasing players for the competition.

A statement from FIFA read: "As part of its commitment to recognise the contribution that football clubs make to the successful staging of the FIFA World Cup, today FIFA started the application process for its Club Benefit Programme that will see $209million (£171.4million) distributed to clubs across the world. This initiative already saw 416 clubs from 63 member associations benefiting from the same amount following the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"For the first time, clubs will be able to apply digitally through the FIFA Professional Football Landscape platform with approximately $10,000 (£8,202) to be received for each one of the days the relevant player remains with his national team during the FIFA World Cup 2022 and the official preparation period. The compensation will be paid to all clubs for which the footballer has played in the two years prior to the FIFA World Cup 2022."

Tottenham have a total of 12 players participating in the World Cup, and those in question would have linked up with their international teammates on Monday, November 14 ahead of the tournament starting on the Sunday. As of Thursday morning, Tottenham have made £2,140,722 from their players competing out in Qatar.

Ben Davies and Joe Rodon were away with Wales for a total of 16 days following their Group B exit, thus earning Tottenham £131,232 per player following their spell away from club duty. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's 17 days saw the club bring in £139,434 and Rodrigo Bentancur £155,838 as he was in Qatar for a further two days as Uruguay played on the final day of the group stage.

Pape Matar Sarr was the next player to leave the competition after Senegal bowed out on Sunday following a 3-0 defeat against England, earning Spurs £172,242 in the process. Son Heung-min's competition came to an end 24 hours later, with his total coming in at £180,444.

Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Cristian Romero, Ivan Perisic and Richarlison still remain in the tournament with the quarter-finals kicking off on Friday. The total amount to come from FIFA will only increase due to having six players still left in the competition, with an England vs Brazil or Argentina final the dream scenario to boost the coffers even further.

In that case Spurs would earn £246,606 as they would have Kane, Dier and one of Richarlison or Romero involved. The loser of a potential Brazil vs Argentina semi-final would see Tottenham claim £41,010.

An exit for Perisic and Croatia in the quarter-final clash against Brazil on Friday would bring in £8,202, with £16,404 added to the kitty if Lloris and France exit vs England as they play the following day. That dream scenario would total £312,222, which in turn would see the current number raised so far increase to £2,452,944.

It may not be a huge figure given today's eye-watering transfer prices but it would certainly help towards a transfer fee for a new addition.
