Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho's Tottenham summer priorities are now clear after transfer window

The January transfer market is now officially closed for business.

A very quiet window for the vast majority of Premier League clubs with limited finances brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic, in the end, as expected, Jose Mourinho didn't add to his Tottenham squad after bringing in seven new players in the summer.

However, there were outgoings as a number of the club's talented youngsters such as Harvey White, Troy Parrott and Jack Clarke linked up with EFL clubs for the remainder of the season.

Fans will now have to wait until the summer for new additions at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it is going to be an important window for the club as they look to bring in players who can help the team contest for major silverware on a consistent basis.

But what do Tottenham now need ahead of the 2021/22 season following the closure of the January window? football.london takes a look.

Make Alli decision

Dele Alli dominated all the talk in N17 during the January transfer window following his lack of football at Tottenham under Mourinho.

Starting on the opening day against Everton before he was hooked at the break, the 24-year-old has played a bit-part role for the Lilywhites ever since.

Subsequently linked with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain to reunite with Mauricio Pochettino, a deal never came to fruition and in the end the player remained in the capital.

Certainly a situation that isn't going to resolve itself now the window has closed unless Alli forces his way back into the XI and plays a major part for the team between now and May, Mourinho and Daniel Levy have to come to a decision over the player in the summer.

Proving he can be a big player for the side in the past, all Tottenham fans will have their fingers crossed that he is still at the club come August.

Reduce foreign player numbers

Another issue Tottenham have to look at in the summer is in regards to the amount of foreign players at the club.

Three over the 17-man limit in the Europa League squad and one under the maximum in the Premier League, Spurs are always going to have an issue when it comes to bringing in new players.

Christian Eriksen was linked with a sensational return to the club last month following his Inter Milan nightmare but a deal was always going to be so complicated because of the non-homegrown player issue.

Mourinho indicated to football.london last month that it's "not possible" to resolve the situation in one season and that's why the summer is going to be so important for Mourinho and Levy as they look to transform the squad.

Bring in a new centre-back

The recent defeat against Liverpool highlighted that Spurs have some major issues to fix at the back.

Errors from the backline for all three goals on the night, it wasn't the first time that Mourinho blamed individual mistakes after the game.

Chopping and changing for the majority of the season to find his perfect backline, the head coach clearly doesn't know his best defence at present and he will be using the remaining months to try and come up with an answer.

Definitely needing to add players to the squad in the summer as well as move some on, Mourinho's first port of call will no doubt be a centre-back as he looks to form a solid defence that can give the team the perfect platform to go on and win games.

Liverpool's move for Virgil van Dijk in 2018 transformed their team and the hope will be that Mourinho can bring in someone who can do likewise in north London.

Solve creativity issue

Sunday's defeat at Brighton demonstrated how important Harry Kane is to the Tottenham team.

Not only a player who can score goals week in, week out for the side, the England captain can also create them as can be seen from his 14 assists this season.

Creativity was a major issue for the team 12 months ago but Kane has played a major part in solving that issue this year.

However, the problem is when he is out of the XI and Spurs are really struggling to make things happen in the final third.

A player to link up midfield and attack would do just nicely in the summer to give Tottenham a bit more of an attacking threat going forward.
