Daniel Leadbitter signs for League Two club following Bristol Rovers release

Daniel Leadbitter has secured a move to League Two following his release from Bristol Rovers.

The right-back has penned a two-year deal with Newport County, who were defeated by Tranmere Rovers in last season's play-off final.

Leadbitter made over 120 appearances for Rovers in a five-year stint at the club after joining from Hereford United in 2014.

Yet injuries took their toll on the 28-year-old last season and he managed just 18 appearances.

Speaking last month about his decision to release Leadbitter, Rovers boss Graham Coughlan told BBC Radio Bristol that injury concerns played their part.

He said: "Leads actually called it in the office on Monday. I felt for him on Monday as he opened up to me and was very honest, he just felt his body was giving up on him and he was susceptible to injury - he'd get over one injury then he'd have another.

"I felt a little bit for him, to be honest, but he'll bounce back, he'll come back stronger, he's a talented kid and a lovely lad to have around."

Leadbitter has now dropped down a league to join the South Wales club, and he told the Exiles' club website he cannot wait to get started.

He said: "I’m delighted to sign with Newport. I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the lads and starting pre-season.

"The manager was a big part in me signing my deal and it sounds like a great Club to be a part of. I can’t wait to get started."

Newport boss Michael Flynn said the club had beaten plenty of competition for the player's signature.

He said: "Daniel is a big signing for us. He is a big coup for us. Dan is very fit and quick, we have beaten off competition for him and I’m really looking forward to working with him this season."
