Daniel Jones is the Bengals’ choice in a new mock draft before Round 1

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to cause the biggest wrinkles in the mock-draft economy ahead of the 2019 NFL draft.

With a new head coach and a borderline top-10 pick, quarterback has entered the discussion for the Bengals — via outsider analysis, mostly. This has led to a huge variance in mock drafts for the Bengals at No. 11.

One notable late mock from an expert arrives courtesy of Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, who has the Bengals making Duke’s Daniel Jones the second quarterback off the board.

Miller wrote the following about the move: “The Cincinnati Bengals will select a smart, accurate, experienced quarterback who is pro-ready to compete with Andy Dalton in a somewhat surprising move but one that makes sense if new head coach Zac Taylor wants to build his team in the model of the Los Angeles Rams.”

It is certainly a viable line of thinking. The Bengals can posture however they want leading up to the draft, but if they want to keep the cost of the quarterback position cheap and apply the money elsewhere, getting a quarterback on a five-year rookie deal is the way to go.

And in Miller’s scenario, Devin Bush, Devin White, Josh Allen, T.J. Hockenson and Jonah Williams are all off the board, to name a few. If it unfolds like that, taking the upside on the most important position of all and tackling needs head-on in the later round would make sense.
