Daniel Jones confident he’s the right guy for Giants

Daniel Jones is the pick for the New York Giants at No. 6 in the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s kind of a surprise pick since there was so much defensive talent left up on the board such as Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen and Ed Oliver, the Aaron Donald-like defensive tackle from Houston.

Jones will sit behind Eli Manning for at least one year and the situation could not be more perfect for either player. Manning and Jones were both mentored by the same coach — David Cutcliffe — and both endorsed by Peyton Manning.

Jones, an economics major who shunned Princeton to play a higher brand of college football, was a walk-on Duke.

Jones told reporters that he thinks he’s in the right place sitting and learning from Eli Manning, a player Cutcliffe modeled him after.

“I’m certainly thrilled to be in New York and I can’t wait to get started,” Jones also said. “I think I was just confident in myself and showed the best version of myself in the process.”

Jones also said he can “make every throw on the field.” We saw that at his pro day where he turned in a solid performance. He indeed made all the throws and showed good mobility.

The selection of Jones will be a controversial one for the Giants, so they hope that his grounded demeanor, intelligence and ability can help him in his journey to become Manning’s successor when the time comes.

For now, he’ll sit while Giant fans point to all the defensive studs they bypassed in order to draft him. By all accounts, this young man just might be able to silence those critics.
