Daniel Johnson given Rangers transfer boost as Preston set asking price for midfielder

Preston have told unsettled star Daniel Johnson they won’t stand in the way of his dream move – as long as Rangers cough up enough cash.

Boss Alex Neil has spoken to the midfielder, who is on Steven Gerrard’s radar and interested in coming north.

The Ibrox club have held talks with the English Championship side about their star, who is set to become a free agent this summer.

Initial discussions had suggested a deal of around £2million but it would take more than double that for North End even to consider things seriously.

Johnson was left out of the weekend defeat to Swansea but is expected to play in Tuesday's EFL Cup clash with Derby.

Neil said: “We have teams showing an interest in our players, which unsettles things.

“The sooner we get clarity, we know exactly where we are and what we’re trying to do, the easier it makes it for everyone.

“We need to understand if lads are signing on then let’s get it done. But if other clubs are coming in to try to take them away, then come in and make a proper offer then see where we are.

“It’s frustrating, I’m trying to get my team ready and focused so the distractions aren’t helpful.”
