Daniel Johns gives insight into freakish career

ON THE RECORD: Daniel Johns is the subject of a new Spotify podcast series.

WHO is Daniel Johns? It's a question often posed, rarely answered.

Even fans that have followed the Silverchair frontman's eclectic career dating back to Frogstomp's teen angst grunge in 1995 all the way to his most recent electronic collaboration with Luke Steele, Dreams, would be hard-pressed to answer that question accurately.

He's been a world famous rock star at 15, sold millions of albums while still living in his parents' Merewether home, had public battles with depression, eating disorders and reactive arthritis, married and divorced pop star Natalie Imbruglia and been touted as a musical genius.

But rarely has the notoriously private Johns, 42, given an insight into his own life, particularly since the 2011 break-up of Silverchair.

On Wednesday music streaming service Spotify launched its Who Is Daniel Johns podcast series, which delves deep into the Newcastle music legend's life and career through new interviews with the man himself.

"I'm happy to do it because I think it's a good vessel to release art," Johns said.

"Above all things, I just want to make art, and I would really love for people to hear it. And the only way to get people to hear my art is through vessels like this because I don't want to perform on stage."

The five-part documentary podcast is introduced by actor Guy Pearce and features interviews with Natalie Imbruglia, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.

The weekly-released episodes will also feature new soundtrack music written by Johns.
