Daniel James transfer: Man Utd dealt big blow in winger chase

Swansea are using Manchester United’s interest in Daniel James to try and start an auction for the Wales winger.

United are keen on James and feel that at 21 he has the potential to become a star in the Premier League.

James is also being watched by a number of other clubs, including Everton , Newcastle and Leeds, and Swansea hope this will drive up his transfer fee.

They know they must cash in on James this summer because he has a year left on his contract and has rejected their attempts to persuade him to agree new terms.

Swansea want the bidding to start at £15million and hope they will end up receiving more for James.

Big debate: The one transfer Man Utd need to make to get back into top four

United have yet to make a formal offer for James and he is one of a number of names on their summer hitlist.

Leeds came within minutes of signing James on transfer deadline day in January only for the then Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins to pull the plug because he felt it was a bad deal for them.

Leeds had agreed terms with the Yorkshire-born wideman and he had passed a medical ahead of a proposed loan switch with a view to a permanent move.

They remain very keen and know they will become more attractive to James if they win promotion through the play-offs.

How Man Utd could line up next season after ruthless summer overhaul of squad

James' sparkling form in the Championship has seen the winger force his way onto the international stage.

He recently notched the winning goal for Wales in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia in March, causing Ryan Giggs to tip him for a big future.

"He's a talent," said the Wales boss in March. "When you've got that raw pace, you're a threat at any level so as a winger, obviously for me playing as a winger, when I was younger, you then have to develop the other parts of your game which I feel he is doing.

"He's played up front as well which will help him because that gives you an appreciation of what you need to do."
