Daniel James says Manchester United teammate deserves to beat him to award

Daniel James has admitted he thinks Luke Shaw should be named the Manchester United player of the month for February — even though he is nominated himself.

United revealed that James, Shaw, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes were the four contenders for the award, with James rewarded for his return to form of late.

The Welsh winger has started the past four successive games for United, scoring twice and giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer another attacking option. But he believes consistent left-back Shaw, who was pipped by Paul Pogba to the January award, deserves the recognition.

“It’s always nice to get a Player of the Month award, but for me personally I think Luke deserves it,” James told United's in-house media.

“He’s been unbelievable recently. He’s shown how good he is.

“He’s created so many goals for us and he’s up there with the top assists. He's continuing to do that, to be that player, so he deserves it."

James did admit he has enjoyed contributing more to Solskjaer's first team after a tough start to the season that saw him linked with a move away from United in October and January.

The 23-year-old previously said he'd questioned himself after some poor displays at the end of last season.

“I feel really good. I think mindset and hard work is always a given,” he added.

“I’ll always believe and give 100 per cent for the team and I’ve just got to keep continuing that.

“It was about can I go and get goals and assists, but if I’m not doing that, how else am I going to contribute to the team and that’s about working hard off the ball, winning the ball high up and creating for others as well.”
