Daniel James reveals his one sad regret over Man Utd move in first interview and admits Ryan Giggs helped make £18m move happen

Daniel James has admitted Wales boss Ryan Giggs was a big factor in his move to Manchester United and revealed his huge move is tinged with sadness following the recent death of his father.

After weeks of speculation, James has finally completed a move from Swansea City to Old Trafford for a fee believed to be worth a total of around £18m.

The winger has signed a five-year deal with the Red Devils, and is clearly excited about the challenges ahead, tweeting that he joined "the biggest football club in the world", shortly after signing.

James has been away with the Wales squad this week, and was given permission by boss Ryan Giggs to complete a medical just before before the squad flew out to Croatia.

And in his first interview with the club's media department, James credited the current Wales boss as a big factor in his move.

"Ryan was obviously a big credit to why I’m here now," he said. "Obviously, he gave that opportunity to me in the Slovakia game, and to score in the first five minutes was amazing for me.

"I think the trust he’s given me, and, from then on, he’s watched a few games of me at Swansea… he’s a big credit to why I’m here now. Obviously he mentioned me here and I’d give a lot back to him for that.”

Giggs had made little secret of the fact that he's a fan of the 21-year old, recently insisting: “With the speed and temperament he has, he could play anywhere.

“If you go to United or any big club there is pressure on you.

“When you meet up internationally then you're used to that pressure and there are so many benefits to playing at a higher level.

“As a manager you want all your players to be playing to a higher level as they can and their ability deserves.”

Having only broken into the first team set-up 18 months ago, James admits he's having to pinch himself a little at the prospect of playing for one of world football's most famous clubs.

"For me, it’s surreal, really. I think every kid grows up wanting to play for Manchester United. I never thought I’d be able to play against them, never mind play for them, so it’s surreal, and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get started.”

The move to Manchester has been expected for some time, but was held up by the tragic death of the player's father , Kevan, and James admits that his one regret about signing for the club is that he's doing so without him.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for me and my family; however, it is tinged with sadness that my father isn’t able to share this experience with us," he continued.

"I am looking forward to working with Ole, meeting the team and getting started."
