Daniel James has been ruled out of Manchester United’s clash with Astana as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to unleash the kids in the Europa League.

James suffered a knock in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Leicester and will be rested in the hope he can return for West Ham on Sunday.

Solskjaer confirmed he will give opportunities to his starlets against their opponents from Kazakhstan, with Mason Greenwood set to play in attack and Axel Tuanzebe also named in his starting line-up.

Fred is also expected to start, while Sergio Romero will resume his role as cup goalkeeper ahead of David de Gea.

Solskjaer said: “We’ve got a game every three or four days now, so you will see the use of the squad. There will be young ones tomorrow. Greenwood will definitely play. He needs game time.

“Every team selection depends on who’s fit, available and who needs games. It’s not set in stone that this tournament is for youngsters. They might play in the league. It might be experienced players who need the games in Europa League.”

On Romero, United’s manager added: “He’s a proven top, top keeper behind David de Gea. We need to keep him ready if something happens to David.”

Possible Man Utd XI: Romero; Dalot, Jones, Tuanzebe, Rojo; Garner, Fred; Lingard, Gomes, Chong; Greenwood
