'Dangerous' - Paul Scholes names his Manchester United player of the season so far

Paul Scholes believes Marcus Rashford is Manchester United’s best player of the season so far. The England hero netted twice in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Wales to take his World Cup tally to three making him the country’s top scorer so far this tournament.

He’s also United ’s highest scorer with eight goals this season. After a dismal 2021/22 season, Rashford has rediscovered his form under Erik ten Hag. He enjoyed an injury-free pre-season and has since nailed down his status in the starting XI.

His revival has caught the eye of Scholes, who named him as United’s top performer in the first half of the season. “I'll go for Marcus,” he told club media.

“I think he's turned it around. He's had a bit of a tough 18 months but I think he's been looking really dangerous this season. Hopefully he's carried it on a little bit with England as well, with the minutes he's played.

“Hopefully he can come back and have a really strong end to the season as well.”

Ex-Reds defender David May said he was impressed with four summer rivals, finding it hard to choose between them as to who had produced the best displays.

“The four signings Ten Hag has signed have been really positive – [Christian] Eriksen, Antony, [Lisandro] Martinez and Casemiro.” When jokingly pressed by Scholes to choose one, he decided upon Martinez.

All four of the aforementioned summer arrivals have already played important roles in their respective countries’ World Cup campaigns. Casemiro hit the winner against Switzerland to send Brazil into the knockouts while Antony has managed two substitute appearances.

After starting on the bench in Argentina’s 2-1 shock loss to Saudi Arabia, Martinez came on to keep a clean sheet in their vital 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Eriksen has orchestrated Denmark’s build-up play albeit they have failed to win either of their first two games against Tunisia (a goalless draw) and France (a 2-1 loss).
