Dangerous driver he behaved like 'teenage idiot' during police chase in Notts village

A van driver sped around a housing estate in a police chase and was told by a judge: "You behaved like some teenage idiot.

"You are too old for this kind of thing. You should have stopped much earlier," Judge John Burgess told 48-year-old Lee Goodman at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was shown film of the incident from a camera fitted to the dashboard of a police car. This followed a blue Ford van around Bilsthorpe on January 2.

Goodman had denied dangerous driving but was convicted by magistrates. He pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police.

He was banned from driving for a year and must carry out 120 hours community work.

The judge questioned whether the van had reached 55mph, as police claimed, and added: "I have seen worse incidents of driving and it was not the fastest."

The film showed the van often on the wrong side of the road. At one point, Goodman drove along a track before going back onto the road. Then he steered across a grass verge.

The police car's flashing blue lights could often be seen reflected on the back of the van. When he stopped, another patrol car pulled up in front.

Lauren Butts, prosecuting, told the judge the driving took place at around 11.20am.

She said: "He said he failed to stop because they would not believe him because he was a man and wanted to get back to his daughter."

Will Bennett, mitigating, said Goodman's "personal life had been somewhat traumatic that day and he simply was not thinking straight".

He said Goodman works for six days a week and will have to carry out the community work on Sundays, which is his only free time.

The court heard his 24-year-old daughter was ill. Goodman "holds down the responsible job as a carer for children with difficulties," the judge said.

Goodman, of Mickledale Lane, Bilsthorpe, will have to pass an extended driving test if he wants to take to the roads again.
