Dangerous driver fined for reversing down busy EK carriageway

A commuter caused chaos when he stopped his car and reversed on a busy dual carriageway in East Kilbride after missing a turn-off.

Grzegorz Dudek was fined £210 and banned from driving for a year at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted driving dangerously on the A749 Cairnmuir Road on May 29 last year.

The charge stated that other drivers had to take evasive action to avoid hitting his vehicle.

Shaun Alexander, prosecuting, said the near-miss happened around 8am on the road that links East Kilbride with Cambuslang.

Mr Alexander told the court: “Police officers saw the accused’s vehicle stop on the nearside lane. This caused other drivers to stop in both lanes.

“The officers were concerned, given the speed limit on the dual carriageway is 70 miles an hour.

“The accused’s vehicle then began to reverse in order to make the right hand turn he had missed.

“He made the turn, crossing the carriageway, but was followed by the police officers who stopped him.

“Dudek told them he’d missed the turn initially and reversed rather than continue along the A749.”

Dudek, 46, of Cedric Rise, Livingston, has no previous convictions.

He represented himself through an interpreter, telling Sheriff Linda Nicolson: “I would like to apologise. I know the fault is mine.

“I was unaware of where the next turn would be. I know it was a mistake.”

Dudek said he requires his licence to commute from West Lothian to Glasgow for work, but accepted a minimum one-year ban is mandatory for dangerous driving.

The sheriff warned him he must resit his test if he wishes to drive when the ban ends.
