'Dangerous driver' dashes from Kerry border to Cork city before crashing in front of gardai

An driver allegedly dodged gardai on the Cork-Kerry border before driving at high speed to Cork city and crashing into a lamp post right in front of them.

The terrifying incident began on the county bounds between Cork and Kerry on an evening earlier this week.

The out of control car allegedly failed to stop for gardai and sped off in the direction of the city, Cork Beo reports.

A post to Gardai Southern Region social media says the car was later observed by the Garda Armed Support unit 'driving dangerously at high speed' coming in to Cork City.

"The car again failed to stop for Gardai before crashing in to a lamp post in Ballincollig.

"The driver was arrested by Gurranabraher Gardai on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, numerous counts of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, no insurance, and to top it off they had a warrant for their arrest."

"The driver has been brought before Cork District Court and will be receiving a number of summons."

Gardai have taken the opportunity to remind motorists in Munster that Operation Fanacht is now in place - there will be over 130 checkpoints on major routes every day during the ongoing Level 3 restrictions.

These will be backed by smaller, rolling checkpoints on minor roads across Cork.

When these checkpoints were in place from April onwards, hundreds of motoring offences were detected across Cork.
