'Dangerous' Carlton buildings demolished as regeneration plans move forward

Two "dangerous" buildings in Carlton have been knocked down as part of wider plans to regenerate the area.

Workers from CMEC demolition were on the site in Burton Road over the weekend, with the majority of the demolition work being completed on Sunday, March 31.

Gedling Borough Council took over the ownership of both the properties - which had included a former cycle and moped shop - in October last year.

The future of the site is now being considered as part of wider improvement plans for the Carlton Square area as a whole.

Prior to the demolition, residents in the area welcomed the regeneration vision.

Among them was Jasmina Aljkanovik, 34, who has lived near the demolition site for the last eight years.

She told Nottinghamshire Live: "It is a bit of an eyesore. It has attracted teenagers and youngsters - some just messing about, others I've seen smoking in there.

"It would be good to see something new there, maybe an outdoor space."

Maureen Godfrey, who is retired, was born in the area said she had fond memories of spending her childhood near the buildings.

The Gedling resident added: "I went to the Victorian primary school just across from these buildings and my mother worked at a laundry nearby.

"It's sad to see all the character of the area disappear over time, much of it changed within a decade, around the 1960s.

"But I understand the need to develop and move with the times."

Gedling Borough Council has said there are "big changes" coming to Carlton Square that will "improve the appearance of the area as well as attract shoppers and retailers".
