'Dangerous and violent' fugitive writes letter of apology for fleeing court

A "dangerous and violent" fugitive who escaped from court today appeared back in the dock in handcuffs.

Adam Bennett fled before he was due to be sentenced for engaging in controlling behaviour towards his ex-girlfriend .

He once threatened to set the woman on fire after holding a lighter near his victim and dousing her in cleaning spray.

But after the 28-year-old thug pleaded guilty on Monday, he ran out of the dock, past a security guard and out of court.

A police manhunt was launched in a bid to return the fugitive woman abuser, of Pinehurst Road, Anfield , to custody.

Thousands of ECHO readers shared pictures of him and police issued a serious warning to women across Merseyside.

Just hours after the appeal was made public by the force, a police spokesman confirmed that he had been arrested.

Liverpool Crown Court today heard Bennett, formerly of Scarisbrick Drive, Norris Green , handed himself into police.

He appeared back in the dock before the city's top judge, Andrew Menary, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool.

With the judge's permission, he was produced handcuffed to one of two guards, and sat in silence for the short hearing.

Louise McCloskey, prosecuting, said Bennett "absented himself" when due to be sentenced by Judge Denis Watson, QC.

She asked that his case be adjourned so that Judge Watson could sentence him, having already heard the details of his crimes.

Ms McCloskey confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service was considering an additional charge of escape from lawful custody.

Charles Lander, defending, said: "The defendant has written a letter apologising for his conduct."

He did not make any application for bail, which Judge Menary said he would have refused.

The judge said Bennett would be sentenced on September 18 and remanded him in custody.

Ms McCloskey previously told the court Bennett became angry after noticing his former partner had looked up her ex on Facebook on her phone.

He forced her into a car and threatened her verbally, drove her to her ex's home and locked her in the car there, then outside another house.

On another occasion, Ms McCloskey said he drove his victim "around for hours", which left her feeling "scared at what he would do next".

She added: "It became a regular occurrence that he would become angry and accuse her of cheating on him."

The court heard that once while driving his girlfriend around in a car, he mounted a pavement and made threats to drive into a lampost.

Ms McCloskey said: "She thought he was going to kill her."

He had also threatened to set her on fire after holding a lighter near her and dousing her in cleaning spray.

Ms McCloskey said she missed days off work, despite him knowing she loved her job.

She said: "He would always prevent her from wearing much makeup and he stopped her from socialising with her friends.

"He also stopped her from sleeping at night until he himself had fallen asleep."

Ms McCloskey added: "She said she suffers with very low self-esteem now and suffers with anxiety and depression.

"She feels frightened and paranoid and has had to install alarms in her house.

"She feels as though the defendant is watching her and is paranoid every time someone drives by her."

Defence lawyers said Bennett had a "very difficult childhood" and struggled to have relationships.

Paul Wood, defending, said: "There are two sides to the defendant; one an insecure individual and one who many members of the public would support with the positive qualities he has. He's a very hard worker."

When Bennett was wanted by police, the force said officers didn't want him to come into contact with any unsuspecting women.

Inspector Jane Moreau from Merseyside Police's Fugitive Team said: "Bennett is regarded as a dangerous and violent individual so I would urge anyone who has seen him or has any information to come forward immediately and help us remove him from the streets."
