'Dangerous and violent' fugitive who escaped court arrested by police

A "dangerous and violent" fugitive who escaped from court has been arrested by police.

Adam Bennett ran from court on Monday afternoon where he was due to be sentenced for engaging in controlling behaviour towards his ex girlfriend.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty after a court heard how he locked his then partner in a house and a car and flushed her contraceptive pill down the toilet during a campaign of horror for the young woman.

Bennett, from Scarisbrick Drive in Norris Green , ran from the dock and past a security guard before he could be sentenced and a man hunt was launched in a bid to return him to custody.

Pictures of him were shared by thousands of ECHO readers before police issued a serious warning to women across Merseyside.

Inspector Jane Moreau from Merseyside Police 's Fugitive Team said: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing to locate Bennett since the warrant was issued yesterday.

"Please share his image as far and wide as possible, to ensure he doesn’t come into contact with any unsuspecting women.

"Bennett is regarded as a dangerous and violent individual so I would urge anyone who has seen him or has any information to come forward immediately and help us remove him from the streets."

Anyone who saw Bennett or knew where he was were asked to call 999 immediately to make sure he was returned to custody as soon as possible.

Just hours after the appeal was made public by the force, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that he had been arrested.

They said: "Adam Bennett has been located and arrested and is currently in custody."

Women who have been victims of domestic abuse can also call 0808 2000 247, the 24-hour National Domestic Violence helpline.
