The Japan Meteorological Agency on Thursday announced the design of a flag that will be used to warn the hearing impaired swimming in the sea or on the beach of an impending tsunami.
The four-square, red and white flag is intended to be waved by beach lifeguards in the event of a tsunami warning. The JMA plans to ask local governments nationwide to adopt the flag starting this summer.
The government stipulates that tsunami warnings are to be transmitted by bells and sirens, but these may be difficult for ordinary sea bathers to hear if there is too much noise from crashing waves and wind, especially if they are hearing impaired.
