'Danger to life' warning issued by forecasters as Scotland braces itself for more thunderstorms

Forecasters have issued a danger to life warning as Scotland braces itself for more adverse weather conditions.

The Met Office has put most of Scotland on a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for all of Sunday.

Scots are expected to see thundery showers, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds during the 24 hours of abysmal weather.

Experts anticipate as much as 80mm of rain to land in some parts of the country in just a few hours.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also placed all of mainland Scotland on flood alert with some damage to buildings expected.

It is anticipated that there will be disruption to public transport services, while Scots drivers have been urged to take extra care on the roads.

The worst of the conditions is expected to hit much of Scotland overnight before much of the showers and storms fizzle out on Sunday evening.

A forecast from the Met Office reads: “Heavy rain is expected to develop in some areas overnight, Sunday then expected to bring further slow-moving heavy, thundery downpours. Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 20-30mm rain may fall in a short space of time with 50-80mm building up over several hours in a few places.

“Many of the showers and thunderstorms will ease on Sunday evening but there is a small risk of heavy rain persisting into Sunday night in a few places.”

Most of Scotland has been battered by horrendous weather conditions in recent days, with thunderstorms and heavy rain hitting the country.

Fire crews were spotted rescuing a car out of floodwaters in Greenock as torrential rain rocked the west coast of Scotland yesterday.

A stunned Scot also captured a ‘tornado like’ cloud at his home Orkney as the adverse weather travelled north.

But the Met Office has given Scots some hope, as forecasters say that the chances of late August heatwave looks ‘promising’.
