'Danger to life' warning as 70mph winds batter parts of Lancashire

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for 70mph winds for parts of Lancashire today.

North and western areas of the UK have been warned that there is a 'danger to life' from the weather until 11am. Some of the major areas covered by the warning include Lancaster, Blackpool, Preston, Lytham, and Morecambe, while Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington, and Rossendale are no longer included.

According to the forecaster, flying debris can cause injuries and even pose a risk to life - however, under a yellow warning, there is only a small chance of this. Damage can also be caused to buildings and commuters should expect longer journey times with road closures and power cuts, Lancs Live reports.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "There is a chance of a deep low pressure system bringing gusts of 60 to 70 mph to some northern parts of England and Wales, and southern Scotland on Wednesday.

"Should this develop disruption would be expected. However, the most likely scenario is for gusts of 50 to 60 mph, most likely areas adjacent to the northern Irish Sea, parts of southeastern Scotland and high ground within the area which may bring some localised disruption.

"In addition, heavy rain may prove an additional hazard particularly over southwest Scotland and northwest England."

Meanwhile, parts of Greater Manchester will be hit by heavy rain throughout the day. According to the Met Office, the region will see constant heavy rain from 9am until 1pm.

Following this, the weather will clear up slightly with intervals of rain throughout the rest of the day and evening. While slightly higher than usual, wind speeds will fluctuate greatly throughout the day, peaking at 30mph at 4pm in Manchester.

The Met Office said that, for the North West, there will be: "A very windy start with a chance of gales, especially around coasts and over the hills. Rain clearing this morning, leaving brightening skies with sunny spells and heavy showers. Winds easing for a time, before strengthening again later. Feeling cooler. Maximum temperature 15 °C."
