Danger driver who led cops on chase through Dumbarton is jailed

A drink-driver who led police on a 10-minute pursuit through Dumbarton while skipping red lights and pulling out in front of cars at speed has been jailed.

Anthony McBride was caught red-handed by cops who watched the dramatic scenes unfold as they tailed him through the town.

The 28-year-old previously pleaded guilty to driving dangerously as well as getting behind the wheel having consumed so much alcohol he failed a breath test.

Shocking CCTV images were shown in court which detailed the perilous manoeuvres McBride made as he sped from outside Cardross to Dumbarton East on Sunday, February 3.

The journey only ended when he collided with a van which toppled over into a parked car at the junction of Glasgow Road and Silverton Avenue.

The court heard the cop who was driving had to brake heavily to “prevent a head-on collision” with the police car and McBride’s car narrowly missing each other.

Defence lawyer Jonathan Paul acknowledged his client, whose address was given as Swallow Road in Faifley, had engaged in an “horrendous episode of driving”.

He added: “At the time he had real issues with alcohol.

“For some crazy reason, he got into a car that day and has driven the way he has.”

Appearing at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week for sentencing, McBride was jailed for 12 months and banned from driving or obtaining a licence for three years.
