Danger driver ploughed into shop and caused £48,000 damage

A dangerous driver whose car flipped through the air and smashed into a shop in Renfrew has been spared jail.

Imran Akmal, 32, was handed a £5,000 fine and banned from the roads for three years.

Akmal left his brother with a fractured spine after driving at double the 30mph speed limit and ploughing into Ferry Nice Foods.

Akmal denied causing serious injury by dangerous driving during the incident on May 14, 2018.

However, a jury at Paisley Sheriff Court convicted him of causing serious injury to Usman Akmal - his 21-year-old brother - leaving him with a fractured spine, broken thumb and scratches on his face, by driving his Volkswagen Golf R dangerously.

The street where the crash happened - Ferry Road, Renfrew - had to be closed while officers investigated the smash.

The court heard the shop was shut for 33 days due to damage to the building.

The cost of goods and stock damaged, and trading losses, amounted to £17,422.53.

Repairs to the building were priced at an additional £30,894.23 - taking the total cost of the crash to £48,316.76.

The court was also told the “vehicle became airborne when it crossed the flood prevention bump” and that Akmal may have been driving at about 63-miles-per-hour.

Akmal, of Pollokshields, Glasgow, appeared for sentencing where Sheriff James Spy told him he was handing him a sentence as “a direct alternative to custody”.

After reading background reports he handed Akmal a £5,000 fine, disqualified him from driving for three years, handed him 30 months supervision by the local authority and ordered that he wear an electronic tag for 12 months, and remain indoors each day between 10pm and 6am.

He also handed him 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Sheriff Spy reminded Akmal that if he breached the order he would be brought back to court and likely sent to jail.
