Danger driver jailed after 80mph police chase through Castlemilk in Glasgow

A dangerous driver who drove at 80mph during a high speed police chase through the southside of Glasgow has been jailed for eight months.

Jamie Paton, who was in a Ford Fiesta, weaved onto the wrong side of the road, narrowly missed colliding with other vehicles and drove down a street saying no entry.

At one point during the 10-minute chase, police tried to form a barrier using two police cars, but Paton, 28, swerved round them and kept on driving.

Paton drove along Carmunnock Road in excess of 80mph and police called off the chase due to fears of public safety.

His car was later found abandoned and Paton was traced to Holmbyre Road in Castlemilk.

When he was arrested he told officers: “I just s**t it and drove off.”

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Paton drove on the wrong side of the road and ignored no entry signs in Castlemilk.

The dad pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving in December last year.

Sheriff Martin Jones QC also banned Paton, of the city’s Castlemilk, from driving for two years and four months.

The court heard officers tried to stop Paton around 10.30pm, but he sped off.

Prosecutor Jennifer McKee told the court that this was done to “avoid the police.”

Officers flashed their lights and sirens but Paton continued to drive at double the speed limit.

Miss McKee said: “The pursuit lasted approximately 10 minutes and was over six miles.”

Lawyer Harvie Diamond, defending, told the court: “He knows it is serious and is under no illusions.”
