Dancing on Ice to welcome its first same-sex couple - beating out Strictly Come Dancing to the move

Dancing On Ice will welcome its first same-sex couple to the show, making history for dancing couples on UK reality TV.

Welsh Steps singer Ian "H" Watkins is set to be teamed up with professional dancer Matt Evers on the upcoming series of the hit programme.

It is understood Watkins asked about the possibility of being paired with a male professional and the production team on the ITV show was "fully supportive".

Watkins, 43, will be joined on the 2020 version of Dancing On Ice by celebrities including businesswoman Caprice Bourret, TV presenter Trisha Goddard, magician Ben Hanlin, former professional footballer Kevin Kilbane and newsreader Lucrezia Millarini.

Love Island star Maura Higgins, Michael Barrymore and Joe Swash will also compete, with soap actress Lisa George, Scottish Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg and Diversity star Perri Kiely also taking part.

The news comes after the BBC announced last month they would be "completely open" to have same-sex couples on Strictly Come Dancing in the future.

Calling Strictly an "inclusive show", they said they are "proud to have featured same-sex dancing amongst the professional dancers in group numbers in previous series".

The Strictly spokesman added: "We are completely open to the prospect of including same-sex pairings between our celebrities and professional dancers in the future, should the opportunity arise."

However, the ITV programme will now beat its rival to the move when Dancing On Ice returns for its twelfth series in 2020.

The hit show will once again be fronted by TV duo Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.
