Dancing on Ice's Ukraine tribute has crowd on their feet as ITV show acknowledges conflict

Dancing on Ice paid tribute to Ukraine with an unexpected gesture at the start of Sunday's live show.

As the Russian invasion of its eastern European neighbour continues to dominate headlines across the world, ITV bosses orchestrated a subtle but powerful change to proceedings to allow for the tribute.

After the opening titles rolled, the camera panned down on the ice which changed colour to yellow and blue, the colours of Ukraine's flag as Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby kicked things off.

On seeing that, the remaining Dancing on Ice couples got up to applaud, as did friends and family in the audience.

And viewers at home were equally moved and impressed by the programme's tribute.

One took to Twitter to comment: " @dancingonice Love the flag supporting #Ukraine #IStandWithUkriane," with another reacting: " #dancingonice standing with ukraine."

Prior to the show starting, presenter Holly predicted that this Sunday's theme - Prop Week - might cause problems for the celebrity skaters.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: "It’s props week tonight on @dancingonice … always a tricky one for our skaters… also our very own @otimabuse dances for us and from watching rehearsals you are in for something special."

She proved to be correct with her prediction as Connor Ball suffered a nasty injury when he and partner Alexandra Schauman attempted a difficult lift using a mop.
