Dancing on Ice's Torvill and Dean on 'hanging up their skates for good'

They brought home an Olympic gold medal 37 years ago, and ice skating legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are continuing to win audiences today on Dancing On Ice.

But Jayne, 56, and Christopher, 62, are aware it won’t be long before the pair will have to hang up their skates for good.

The pair became instant icons when they won gold at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics.

They were enticed out of retirement to front the ITV celeb skating contest Dancing On Ice in 2006 and are now inspiring younger generations to take up the sport.

For now Torville and Dean are still dazzling audiences with their performances on the Sunday night show.

Speaking with the Mirror Chris said: “Each performance is getting closer to the final one and that’s why we’re appreciating what we’re doing now."

“When you’re younger you don’t think it’s going to end and then, when you get to the twilight of things, you begin to realise 'you know what, this has been good to us, it’s our old friend' and you’ve got to treat it with respect.”

Jayne said: “I don’t know when we’ll call it a day. We tried to retire in the 90s then Dancing on Ice popped up and suddenly we found ourselves performing again.

“And while we still love it, and can do it to a level we’re happy with, we’ll keep on. But I don’t know about when I’m 77.”

And Chris says he’s 'noticing warning signs.'

“I can’t run any more, my knees don’t let me. On the ice, I’m not as fast, I can feel that," he said.

“So we have to be as creative as we can from a movement point of view to make up for it.”

On tomorrow’s show they'll be seen performing a new routine with young skaters Atl Ogay-Perez, 13, and Ashlie Slatter, 11.

Recorded before lockdown, it will be the first time the friends haven't performed live on the show because of coronavirus restrictions and social distancing which means they had to stay two metres apart.
