Dancing On Ice's most bitter feuds - cruel insults, 'diva' claim and fiery on-air rows

Dancing On Ice is known for its furious spats from on-air rows on the stage to accusations of laziness and sleeping on the job.

The ITV show is soon to return, with an exciting roster of stars including Sally Dynevor, Liberty Poole and Ben Foden lined up to take to the ice early next year.

With some keen celebrities already beginning their gruelling training regime, they will likely be a little nervous especially given the number of injuries that occurred during the previous series.

But perhaps even more important than perfecting those toe loops is perfecting the relationship between the celebrity and their professional skating partner - because we have all seen just how catastrophic it can be when it all goes wrong.

Let's take a look back at the show's most savage feuds (mostly thanks to Jason Gardiner).

Gemma Collins vs Jason Gardiner

Jason and Gemma's furious rows stole the spotlight for the series (ITV)

Back when Jason was a Dancing On Ice judge, he and Gemma clashed so horrifically badly it was said to have been one of the reasons he was not invited back for another series.

Jason gave Gemma some seriously harsh criticism whenever she took to the ice, and self-confessed diva Gemma wasn't having any of it, accusing him of bullying her and selling stories to the press about her.

Gemma and her partner Matt Evers had skated to Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend from Marilyn Monroe film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

A catty Jason told Gemma she was "channelling Marilyn [Monroe] but we ended up with Anna Nicole Smith", adding that Gemma had "no elegance".

Gemma interrupted: "Can I just say one thing? Maybe if you didn't sell stories on me, I wouldn't be so upset this week - so take that."

Stunned, Jason tried to defend himself but angry Gemma shouted: "Boring - next!"

Fiery-tongued Jason told Gemma that her outburst "doesn't help her cause" and called her a "brat".

Gemma continued to repeatedly shout: "Don't sell stories on me!"

She later wrote on Instagram : "I’m really tired of being BULLIED by this man... I wish you would stop... it’s very very upsetting and hurtful let it go Jason stop bullying me ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

"I won’t be bullied any more making me feel uncomfortable to come back to the final on Sunday! I was looking forward to Sunday but won’t be anywhere near someone who’s BULLYING me... this is NOT ACCEPTABLE on any level."

Jason said he had consulted his lawyers after Gemma accused him of selling stories - a claim he vehemently denied, and The Sun reported he had in fact done an interview with them, which was the source of the story Gemma took issue with.

When Jason was axed from Dancing On Ice the following year, Gemma scathingly said: "Hallelujah! Let’s be fair, he only works twice a year in TV.

"Think he does Dancing On Ice and some Panto. Would we miss him this year? Hell no."

Meanwhile, Jason called the show "toxic" and said he went through "dark times" and realised he was not valued at all by ITV when he was dropped.

Gemma Collins vs Kem Cetinay

Kem claimed Gemma went for a nap before leaving early during filming (ITV)

In the very same series, Gemma also had beef with Love Island star Kem Cetinay.

Kem had accused Gemma of being unprofessional and of taking a nap while the other contestants all worked hard in a dress rehearsal.

He also claimed she had left the live show early due to "boredom".

Speaking on This Morning, Kem said: "Obviously Gemma wasn’t performing this week, she wasn’t doing her routine but as always she had the headlines as per usual.

"We did the group routine rehearsals before – she was having a nap, she wasn’t there.

"I thought she might have learned from her mistake but we went into the live show and the last quarter of the show she went missing.

"I did speak to her afterwards and she said she was a bit bored but she does love skating."

Host Holly Willoughby replied: "I really love Gemma, you know I’m a big fan of Gemma’s and I think she’s great on the show I do but I think there has to be a bit of professionalism that comes into any work you do – you need to take a bit of pride in your work and you just shouldn’t do that."

Gemma furiously took to Instagram to deny the accusations, telling her fans: "Hopefully they have been told straight the facts now. I agree with Holly. If I had done that I would be saying the same, how unprofessional.

"I’ve only got love for Holly and Phil, there’s no beef here. We just want to skate our a**** off in the competition. Holly and Phil have done nothing wrong, they were given some information and gave their opinion."

A source told The Sun afterwards that Kem had apologised for "betraying" Gemma.

"Kem and [Gemma] are good friends and it felt like he’d betrayed her by making the comments he did, which he’s since massively apologised for," said the insider.

"But Kem was only doing his job as Dancing on Ice digital presenter and part of that is revealing what goes on when the cameras stop rolling.

"The pair have since managed to settle their differences and hopefully everything will go back to normal ahead of Sunday’s live show."

Megan Barton Hanson vs Vanessa Bauer

Megan was in a relationship with her Love Island co star Wes Nelson when he was paired with Vanessa Bauer on Dancing On Ice in 2019.

Shortly before the first live show, Vanessa announced she had broken up with boyfriend Louis Nathaniel.

Taking to her Instagram Story, Megan captioned a snap of herself: "Love that you decide to announce your breakup with your boyfriend on the night of your 1st performance with my boyfriend!

"You've never reached out to me once or invited me to watch you train, it pained you to introduce yourself to me last night you didn't even look me in the eye LOL."

She added: "Hope the tactical breakup got you the headlines you wanted babe."

Vanessa hit back by posting a photo of herself which a fan had captioned: "The moment she wins the argument. And she knows it."

She also made a thinly-veiled jab with the hashtags "#strongwoman" and "#womenempowerment" in an Instagram post thanking her fans for their support.

Wes later told Heart Radio that Megan and Vanessa had resolved their differences.

"It’s a lot of pressure for Megs. It’s concluded. They’ve spoken to each other. They’re happy," he said.

"I don’t even know what they spoke about, I just let women get on with their women talk."

He added: "[Megan] has said, 'I wish I had privately messaged her.' She’s not apologising for it.

"It’s how she feels. I’m not going to argue with it. I’m going to back my girlfriend."

Megan would go on to admit in an Instagram Q&A that she regretted the Instagram Story and wished she hadn't written it.

Caprice Bourret vs Hamish Gaman

Caprice claimed she was "scared to speak" during training with Hamish, and they parted ways after one week (ITV)

Caprice made headlines in the 2020 series when she sensationally vanished from the show for a week, before returning with a different skating partner.

It was rumoured she had rowed with her original partner Hamish, and when she came back she was paired with Oscar Peter instead - though she ended up quitting weeks later.

Host Holly Willoughby left viewers stunned when she announced the news that Caprice and Hamish had split.

"Unfortunately, Caprice and Hamish have parted ways," she said.

"As you saw in our opening number Hamish remains very much part of our professional team and we hope to have Caprice back on the ice next week."

A source told The Sun that Caprice had been accused of being cruel to Hamish.

"Caprice was mean to Hamish during rehearsals - it was often in front of other cast and crew - and he was left very upset by it because he’s such a professional and a gentle giant," they said.

"Hamish was walking on egg shells a lot of the time - he felt Caprice seemed to struggle with the demands of the show and described her as a bit of a diva because she would tell him off a lot and just generally thought she was above it all."

Caprice reportedly struggled to cope with Hamish's gruelling training regime (Instagram)

Meanwhile, Caprice reportedly claimed she was "too scared to speak" during training sessions as Hamish had a strict "three strikes" policy.

A source told The Sun: "[Caprice] didn't expect to be ignored during training and in the end was too scared to speak after Hamish enforced a three strikes and you're out rule.

"As a complete skating novice she had hoped to be guided through the moves but she was refused extra help when rehearsing lifts and was even branded a 'diva' for requesting additional support."

Soon after, Hamish said on Instagram that he was "not okay".

"Thank you so much for your kind messages. I’ve been overwhelmed by your love and support—it’s brought me to tears at times," he wrote.

"Honestly, I’m not okay, but I’d like to thank Amelia, my pro family and ITV for doing all that they can to support me.

"I’m comforted knowing the truth always comes out in the end, and I hope we can focus on the skating again now."

Jason Gardiner vs Karen Barber

Jason was also known to trade barbs with Karen, who had her role switched from the judging panel to a coaching role.

Because of this, Jason nastily told her: "If your opinion still mattered you'd be on the panel," when she gave a critique that Jason disagreed with.

Karen asked him to repeat what he'd said while slowly walking closer and closer to him - before telling him: "You know, Jason, you really are so offensive. You bring to this panel, so little you really do."

A nervous-looking Holly stepped in to pull the warring pair apart, but they would later bury the hatchet when Karen returned to the show as head coach.

Jason tweeted a selfie with Karen with the caption: "For those who think @Woo2Kaz and I haven't got over our spat, I'm delighted she is back as our Head Coach on @dancingonice. The skating suffered last series without her unparalleled coaching! #WelcomeBack #Honestjudge #BestCoach".

Karen replied: "The past is called the past for a reason, let’s look forward to the future and what is going to be a great series x".

Tim Healy vs Jason Gardiner

In another of Jason's controversial moments, his harsh critique of Denise Welch's skate with Matt Evers in 2011 did not go down well with her then-husband, Tim.

Jason told Denise: "It shows that you are better at the slower stuff - but I would like to say it was a little bit like watching two people play Twister.

"It was like Matt did a position then he assisted you into another position, there was no flow."

Not having any of it, Tim, who was watching in the audience, got up from his seat and marched down to the stage to confront Jason.

"She’s 52 and she’s got four jobs! How many jobs have you got, eh?" he demanded as he jabbed his finger in Jason's face.

Denise cringed and begged Tim to stop, while Jason simply remarked that his breath stank.

Tim later said: "It just got me going a bit that was all, I'm her husband and I love her."

Meanwhile Jason ranted on Twitter : "Those who think I was rude to Tim Healy can shove it. He got in my face with breath that smelt of stale p**s and alcohol whilst I was talking.

"I'm not perfect but at least I have oral hygiene... is it too much to ask for him to clean his teeth?

"I wouldn't go anywhere near that face again to be honest. But I have no problem telling people how I feel to their face. You know it."

Ouch.

Andi Peters vs Tamara Sharp

The TV host claimed Tamara would speak about him like he wasn't present (Ken McKay/REX/Shutterstock)

Andi took part in the first ever series of the show in 2006, but was eliminated in week two and revealed years later that there was certainly no love lost between him and partner Tamara Sharp.

He claimed Tamara wouldn't even say his name or address him directly, and said they "didn't really get on" - though Tamara has never publicly addressed the claims.

Andi said on Lorraine: "The partnership is really important as I said. Me and my partner bizarrely all those years ago, we didn't really get on.

"She used to refer to me to Torvill and Dean as 'him'."

"We'd all be on the ice and she would say to Torvill and Dean, 'Tell him he needs to...' and I was like, 'I am here!'

"But I would be stood at the side eating a chocolate bar," he conceded.

He added: "My partner wasn't great."
