Dancing on Ice's Jayne Torvill dismisses unfair advantage claims ahead of show's final

Former Olympic ice skater Jayne Torvill has shut down claims that some Dancing on Ice contestants have an unfair advantage over others. Jayne appeared on Good Morning Britain today (Friday, March 25) alongside her professional partner, Christopher Dean.

After Kimberly Wyatt, Regan Gascoigne, and Brendan Cole all made it to the final during the last episode, some viewers have branded the show 'a fix', as all three finalists have dancing backgrounds, NorthWalesLive reports. During this morning's show, Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins asked skating legends Torvill and Dean about the criticism.

"It will only help them once they've learnt to skate and everyone has to learn to skate," Jayne explained. "You can't just say you can dance and go off on the ice."

Torvill and Dean then listed two previous winners of the competition who had no dancing experience prior to competing on the show. Capital FM DJ Sonny J won Dancing on Ice last year, whilst rugby player Kyran Bracken won in 2007.

"But having said that," Dean added: "Once they can learn to skate then their dance abilities come into play because they know how to move, how to hold themselves, expression and all those things."

The Dancing on Ice final will skate onto our screens on Sunday, March 27. The three remaining contestants will be recreating Torvill and Dean's iconic Boléro dance routine from the 1984 Winter Olympics, which took place in Sarajevo.

However, the pair revealed that they have not seen any of the performances. Christopher said: "They've been hiding them away from us, it will be the first time we see it [on Sunday]."

Originally, the finale was due to air on Sunday, March 20, but was pushed back following an ITV scheduling shake up to accommodate the FA Cup quarter-final. One good thing about the show being pushed back, though, is that Holly Willoughby has now tested negative for Covid-19, and will be joining Phillip Schofield to host Sunday night's show.

The final of Dancing on Ice will air on Sunday, March 27, at 7pm, and will be shown on ITV and ITV Hub.
