Dancing on Ice's Ashley says unlucky 13th series 'jinxed' after broken bones and Covid

Superstitious judge Ashley Banjo thinks Dancing on Ice has been on the rink of disaster because it is the 13th series.

Five stars have had to quit because of injury and Covid-19, throwing the series into a spin.

It was cut short by a week and the final was moved to Sunday night.

Diversity dancer Ashley said: “Why do I think there’s been so many injuries? It’s series 13. You’ve got to push yourself physically and mentally. Maybe people have pushed too far.”

The first casualty was actress Denise Van Outen, 46, who broke her shoulder in three places in rehearsals and still needs treatment.

Comic Rufus Hound, 42, and Emmerdale’s Joe-Warren Plant, 18, could not return after positive Covid-19 tests.

The Only Way is Essex favourite Billie Shepherd, 31, was concussed in a fall on the ice and had to withdraw.

Finally, Jason Donovan, 52, had to hang up his skates with a back injury.

Ex-Coronation Street star Faye Brookes, 33, is favourite to win at 4/9, with Capital FM DJ Sonny Jay, 27, at 15/8 and champion hurdler Colin Jackson, 54, at 13/1.

Judge Jayne Torvill, 63, thinks Sonny has shown the most improvement.

She said: “He was not a natural skater but when I saw him on the first show I was quite shocked how good he was.

The show’s about having someone with no talent and watching their progress.”

On Sunday the finalists will skate their series-favourite routine, a showcase and their Torvill and Dean-inspired Bolero.

Celebs from the series back on the ice will include Rebekah Vardy, Lady Leshurr, Myleene Klass and Graham Bell.

Jayne and Ashley, with fellow judges Christopher Dean and actor John Barrowman, said they would love to be back for series 14.

So who would they like to see on the ice next year?

Chris thought Piers Morgan would be brilliant and John said: “We would give him some really good critiquing.”

Ashley suggested Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Chris added: “There is a strong possibility that there could be a judges’ routine for sure next year.”

The Dancing on Ice final is on ITV this Sunday at 6pm
