Dancing On Ice contestant Rufus Hound divides viewers after 'making show political'

Dancing On Ice 2021 kicked off this weekend with the first instalment of the launch show.

Six celebrities skated, with the rest of the line-up preparing to take to the rink next week.

Among those was actor and comedian Rufus Hound and his partner Robin Johnstone, who stood in for Graham Bell and Yebin Mok after the pair suffered a "freak accident" in rehearsals. You can find out more about what happened here.

The pair skated to Eurovision hit Think About Things and wound up with a golden ticket. See what the scores were and who is in the first skate off of the series here.

Dancing On Ice's new golden ticket can be issued by the judges on week one and two and allows one celebrity and their professional skater to miss the vote off and go straight through to Musicals week, a decision which left Rufus visibly emotional.

Presenter Phillip Schofield then asked Rufus how he felt on winning the free pass and if he ever imagined being stood on ice, crying over a golden ticket, reports Manchester Evening News.

Rufus' response to being awarded the Golden Ticket has divided viewers (ITV)

The 41-year-old replied: "Mate, we live in a world where the people we elect don't want to feed hungry children. This (routine) is the least crazy thing."

While many praised Rufus, others felt frustrated at the comment, claiming it made the show "political" when it was meant to be offering light relief.

"Rufus seriously can we not just watch light entertainment without politics," wrote one.

Another added: "That's it turned it straight off ... Put Netflix on IM SICK TO DEATH OF ALL THESE POLITICAL REMARKS ITS SPOILING THE VIEWING RUFUS WHAT AN IDIOT.. spoilt the whole series now I won't be watching it."

While a third comment: "Rufus Hound, what a disappointment with his 'Political Statement' on Dancing On Ice . FFS can't entertainers stick to entertaining for just 5 minutes."

Others praised him for his words.

"Rufus Hound, just take the crown now!" stated one.

While a second added: "Nice one Rufus Hound! Highlighting the Tories for their shameful approach to the UK's hungry kids on a light entertainment show watched by millions. Get in there!"

And a third wrote: "Rufus Hound throwing shade at the government over the free school meals business has made my night."
