Dancing on Ice 2022: Kye Whyte's brain injury that left him in a coma to avoiding London gangs

Olympic silver medallist Kye Whyte will be swapping his BMX bike for ice skates as he takes part in the 2022 series of Dancing on Ice. You can read the full lineup here.

The 22-year-old is known for winning the first-ever Olympic silver medal in BMX and Team GB's first-ever BMX medal in 2021 when the sport debuted in Tokyo Olympics.

However, before this success Kye suffered a very scary injury that left him in a coma for five days and unable to train for a year.

When he was just 13 Kye was involved in a serious BMX bike crash during a race which left him knocked out and suffering from a bleed on the brain.

This resulted in Kye being in a coma for five days and unable to train for a year, losing him his spot on the youth Great Britain programme.

Kye, however, did not let this injury stop him and being successful in BMX was his only goal in life - this included steering clear of the London gangs of his childhood.

The BMX star grew up in Peckham, in London, and in many interviews has reflected how different his life would have been if he followed the route of many of his school friends and joined a gang.

He has lost school friends to knife crime and he admits that some of them are selling drugs or caught up in crime. The young star is firm friends with another young sporting star, footballer Reiss Nelson who plays for Arsenal.

Kye said the pair of them were able to gain respect and be left alone by the gangs for their dedication to their sports as Kye spent most of his time training at Burgess Park.

Dubbed the 'Prince of Peckham' Kye had been riding his BMX bike since the age of three, alongside his brother Tre Whyte who retired from the sport in 2020.

His father Nigel co-owned the Brixton BMX Club where Kye trained and in 2018 he came second in the European championship and won the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in 2019.

Kye is partnered with professional ice skater Tippy Packard and although he has roller skated when he was younger, he has very little experience on the ice.

Dancing on Ice starts on Sunday, January 16 at 6.30pm on ITV.
