Dancing on Ice 2022 injuries as celebrities forced to miss live shows

Dancing On Ice is back for 2022 with a brand new line-up of celebrities.

The new series kicked off on Sunday, January 16 with a star-studded cast list, including Love Island's Liberty Poole, Coronation Street legend Sally Dynevor, Silver medallist BMX racer Kye Whyte and former S Club 7 star Rachel Stevens. You can see the line-up in full here.

And while it may only have just started, the competition hasn't been without drama, with two celebrities already missing shows due to injuries in training.

The launch episode also saw one star make history as Happy Mondays percussionist Bez wore a helmet during his first performance, and for good reason.

Speaking about the risks at the start of the series, presenter Phillip Schofield said: "You have a rink that is full of essentially blades and we know how dangerous they can be and how deeply they can cut and how sharp they are. I've just watched a video of Bez on his second day fall over backwards so hard that his helmet flew off. Dancing On Ice is really dangerous. They really all risk everything for it. We've seen in the past that people do get hurt and of course you want to avoid that at all cost. I think we will be wrapping Bez up in bubble wrap that’s for sure."

Kye Whyte

The professional BMX racer and partner Tippy Packard were forced to miss their second skate after Kye fell on ice in rehearsals.

An ITV spokesperson said at the time: "During rehearsals for this Sunday's show, Kye fell on the ice and sustained an injury and will therefore not perform in this weekend's show."

The pair later revealed on Instagram that Kye had dislocated his knee. Taking to Instagram stories, Tippy said: "Hi guys, we just got some news. So we were thinking that it was not a big deal and Kye just kind of fell on his knee. But guess what actually happened?"

"I dislocated it," Kye interjected. "I dislocated my knee but we'll be skating this weekend."

"We are going to be really careful," Tippy added. "He's going to be wearing a knee brace. We're going to really take it easy but we obviously want to put on a show for you guys. So we'll see you on Sunday!"

Rachel Stevens

The former S Club 7 star and partner Brendyn Hatfield missed their first skate after Rachel sustained a fracture to her wrist, but the pair returned in week three.

A spokesperson for Dancing on Ice said at the time: "Due to an injury sustained in training and on the expert advice from the Dancing on Ice medical professionals, Rachel Stevens will not skate in this Sunday's show."

Rachel added on Instagram: "Thank you so much for all your lovely messages of support today. A huge thank you to @sharonmorrisonuk and all the team @dancingonice for taking such good care of me.

"My wrist is healing really well and @brendynhatfield and I have been working really hard and doing everything we can to get back on the ice as soon as possible.

"I'm so lucky to have such a great partner and we're so excited to share our performance with you week 3! Bring it on!"

Bez

The Happy Mondays star suffered a horror fall during training before his debut skate.

Footage showed Bez's helmet fly off after he smashed his head on the ice during training for the hit ITV show.

As Bez lay on the floor, his dancing partner Angela Egan rushed over to check he was okay, telling him: "Give yourself a minute."

Brendan Cole

Prior to the show starting Brendan Cole, who is partnered with Vanessa Bauer, revealed he'd suffered a concussion.

Speaking to the Express, he said: "You're going to have accidents and they happen constantly.

"You don't want to land on a bruise that's already been bruised [for] three weeks, or even three days before, that really hurts."

He added: "I concussed myself on the first day which was very embarrassing, but thankfully that was about eight weeks ago so [I've] fully recovered and [I'm] cracking on."

Dancing On Ice continues Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
