Dancing on Ice 2022: Bez dubbed the new Todd Carty as he freaky dances to Happy Mondays' hit and Shaun Ryder cheers him on

He was one of the biggest stars of the Indie music scene during the '90s with his band Happy Mondays.

So when Bez took to the ice for the first time on Dancing On Ice on Sunday, January 16 it was inevitable he would perform a routine to their biggest hit, Step On.

And while the audience lapped up the performance, which saw Bez wearing a crash helmut decorated with a melon to pay homage to the song's lyrics, the judges weren't so impressed, with ice skating legend Christopher Dean even comparing him to Todd Carty - the actor who famously stumbled off stage during one of his dances.

The judges - Dean, Jayne Torvill, Ashley Banjo and former Strictly star Oti Mabuse - awarded him a total of just 12.5 points out of 40.

Dean told him he reminded him of former EastEnder Carty who had provided "TV gold" and lasted a long time in the competition despite his unforgettably unstable routines.

Torvill said: "It was a very special performance - unique in fact."

And Banjo added that anyone who wore a crash helmut had his respect for actually making it onto the ice.

Bez was cheered on by fellow Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder and his routine came after show opener from Brendan Cole. The former Strictly star score a massive 30.5 out of 40 and told his routine was the best opener in 14 series of the reality show. Read more here.

They were among six celebrities who danced during the first week and the remaining six will line up on Sunday, January 23 which will see the first elimination. Ria Hebden will be in the first dance off along with one of next week's dancers.
