Dances with Wolves actor Graham Greene dies aged 73

  • Canadian actor Graham Greene, best known for his role in Dances with Wolves, died in Toronto on Monday at the age of 73 after a long illness.
  • His performance as medicine man Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner's 1990 film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and helped shift perceptions about Indigenous talent in Hollywood.
  • Born in 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Greene, an Oneida, began his acting career in the 1970s after working in various trades.
  • Greene had an extensive filmography and television career, including roles in The Green Mile, Maverick, Wind River, The Last of Us, and Reservation Dogs.
  • He received numerous awards throughout his life, such as a Grammy, a Canadian Screen Award, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015.
