While dancing comes natural to many people, for others, hitting the dance floor can be a mortifying experience.
But clubs in the future could offer people with two left feet a glimmer of hope, if a recent rave is anything to go by.
The rave took place at Silicon Valley’s Gray Area Festival last week, and saw dancers take to the stage wearing robotic exoskeletons.
The festival describes the rave - which is actually an installation called ‘Inferno’ by artists Louis-Philippe Demers and Bill Vorn - as a ‘remarkably unique experience’.
It said: “Participating audience members, clad in machine-powered wearable exoskeletons, will step on stage to perform for a show unlike any other.
“Each robot is designed to perform dynamic movements choreographed and activated by the artists, mobilising the performers to dance in time to the dark, industrial techno soundtrack for the audience.
“Shifting the command from artist to computer and role of audience to performer, Inferno questions the nature of control and agency in the landscape of technology and performance today.
“At the frontier of art and technology, this interactive performance poses a remarkably unique experience questioning our world in its transformation.”
However, a video of the installation has been described as a ‘forced exoskeleton rave’ on Twitter .
One user replied: “The words ‘chained dancing slaves’ comes to mind,” while another described it as ‘straight out of a sci-fi nightmare.’
