Dana White: UFC has offered Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier a fight

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier have been offered a fight.

According to UFC president Dana White, the promotion has proposed a fight to the two contenders following a back-and-forth they had on social media earlier this week.

“(Conor) called out Poirier for a fight with (him) in Dublin for charity,” White said, in an interview with Barstool Sports. “So we offered them both a fight. We offered Dustin and Conor a fight, so we’re waiting to hear back from both of them.”

On Monday, McGregor and Poirier engaged in a Twitter dialogue, agreeing to compete in a charity exhibition fight in Ireland later this year. It’s unclear given their contractual statuses whether or not an exhibition could happen outside the UFC.

Shortly after White’s comments were published online, Poirier posted a context-free message on his Instagram story, potentially pertaining to the UFC’s offer.

“I accept,” Poirier wrote.

If McGregor and Poirier were to fight against one another, it’d be the second time in their professional careers. At UFC 178 in September 2014, McGregor defeated Poirier with a first-round knockout.

McGregor, 32, has not competed since January, when he defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 by first-round TKO. The fight was McGregor’s first since an October 2018 loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier, 31, was pegged to fight Tony Ferguson in the UFC 254 co-main event on Oct. 24. However, Poirier and the UFC hit a contractual stalemate and the fight was never finalized. Poirier’s most recent fight came at UFC 242 in September 2019 when he was submitted by Nurmagomedov in Round 3.
