Dana White outlines what's next for Conor McGregor after Dustin Poirier defeat

Dana White believes Conor McGregor will fight Dustin Poirier for a fourth time following his defeat to the American at UFC 264.

The Notorious is facing a period on the sidelines after suffering a horror leg injury in the main event bout at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

McGregor started aggressively by targeting Poirier with leg kicks, but the American quickly capitalised after seeming to hear the Dubliner’s leg crack during one exchange.

Poirier took his opponent to the ground, where he dominated before the fighters returned to their feet.

Both swung and missed and McGregor stepped back before his leg collapsed beneath him, sparking speculation he may have suffered a bone fracture.

McGregor somehow survived until the end of the round when the bout was stopped.

It was a dramatic conclusion to the fight which followed their January rematch, with Poirier calling his opponent a “dirtbag” after the fight.

UFC President Dana White wants to see McGregor and Poirier clash again, with the American now set to face Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title later in the year.

White said after the bout: "The fight didn’t get finished. You can’t have a fight finish that way.

"We’ll see how this whole thing plays out. Who knows how long Conor’s out, so Poirier will do his thing until Conor’s ready."

Those comments open the door to McGregor facing Poirier for the title if the Diamond beats Oliveira, but Poirier believes the former two-weight champion now has to beat someone else before getting a shot at the belt.

The Louisiana native said: "We are going to fight again whether it's in the octagon or on the sidewalk."

He added: "Conor McGregor is one in three or one in four in the lightweight division, yeah he has to win some fights, but a guy like that goes out there and starches somebody he's right back in the top contender talk just because of his star power."
