Dana Delany drama 'The Code' canceled one day after season finale

"The Code" has been cracked.

One day after the CBS military drama completed its first season with Monday's finale, the ax swiftly fell on the program, Variety reported Tuesday.

"Thank you to all you wonderful people who watched ('The Code'), wrote star Dana Delany on Twitter Tuesday. "Last night was our finale and sadly, no more. I'll never make General. But I loved this cast of stellar actors (and) know we'll meet again. Semper Fidelis."

The legal procedure chronicled soldiers taking on legal challenges as members of the Marine Corps, collaborating on cases while working from the Judge Advocate General headquarters in Quantico, Va.

Following its lead-in "NCIS," "The Code" debuted strongly April 9 by drawing a respectable 8.13 million viewers, according to The Nielsen Company. But the very next week, viewership plummeted nearly 45%. And by Monday, only 2.91 million people bothered to watch Monday's 12th and final broadcast.

The show struggled to maintain solid footing. In the original pilot, Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino assumed Delany's role as a colonel while "Brothers & Sisters" star Dave Annable was replaced by Aussie stud Luke Mitchell as Cpt. John Abraham.

Critics panned "The Code" early on, collaring it with a mere 36% approval rating on entertainment reviews website Rotten Tomatoes.

"There's nothing CBS procedurals enjoy quite as much as wasting Broadway stars in roles that don't let them sing," sniped Hollywood Reporter critic Dan Flenberg in his assessment of "The Code."

Three times, "NCIS" has finished as the top-watched network program but "The Big Bang Theory" has taken home the honor the previous two seasons. The final results of the 2018-19 season will be released later this summer.
