Dan Snyder’s pursuit of new Redskins stadium takes a hit

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan told owner Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins recently he’s abandoning efforts to lure the team to build a new stadium next to MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, on the Washington border.

Liz Clarke and Ovetta Wiggins of the Washington Post explained what the development means: “Moreover, barring a change of heart, Hogan’s decision strips Redskins owner Daniel Snyder of significant leverage in getting his new stadium built — leverage Snyder was counting on when, and if, he starts negotiating with officials in the District on financial incentives and accommodations for the project.”

The biggest problem is Snyder prefers the site of RFK Stadium, so losing Hogan’s help means the Redskins owner won’t have some leverage in talks with District of Columbia officials. Prior attempts to secure his preferred site fell flat.

With Snyder blaming the Redskins’ current stadium for many of the team’s woes, talk about a move isn’t going to go away. Still, the Redskins are under contract to play at FedEx Field until September 2027. The stadium opened in 1997.
