It looks like the Washington Redskins are going to stay the Washington Redskins.
A Supreme Court decision early on Monday morning can be looked at as a victory for Washington in their attempts to keep the Redskins’ name, according to Yahoo!
The Court ruled that the federal government may not prohibit trademarks on “immoral” or “scandalous” materials, in a case brought by a clothing line known as FUCT. Although the Redskins were not a party to the case, it represents a victory for the team because opponents of the team name have argued that they should lose their trademark protection under the “immoral or scandalous” laws that have now been ruled unconstitutional.
A loss of the trademark protection wouldn’t alone force the team to change their name, but it would have likely cost the team to lose a lot of money in merchandise sales, something that team owner Dan Snyder would not take kindly to.
It is a messy topic that has strong feelings on both sides, and large sections of the country will likely disagree about how things ended up. All we know is that Snyder got his wishes — you decide whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
