Dan Quinn explains why he won’t give up defensive play-calling duties

The Falcons are giving up 30.4 points per game in 2019, the second-highest average in the league behind the Miami Dolphins.

This is problematic for head coach Dan Quinn, who took over the defensive reigns this season after the team fired defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel.

With Atlanta off to a 1-4 start, Quinn is firmly planted on one of the hottest seats in the NFL. Still, the Falcons head coach believes he gives the defense its best chance of success, and reportedly won’t give up his defensive play-calling duties.

In a conference call with reporters, Quinn explained his decision to continue betting on himself despite the continuous struggles of his defense.

“My ego would never be as big as the team,” explained Quinn. “I’ll always do what’s best for the team. If I felt that was best, trust me, I would have certainly done that. I know what we can do, we can do better. That’s where my mind is. At this time, I don’t think that’s where I’m at. I don’t see myself in that space.”

Quinn can’t be stubborn enough to continue running what’s become a beatable defensive scheme unless he changes things up a bit. He plans too, as you can see in the below tweet from Falcons reporter Kelsey Conway.

Obviously, the team’s entire defensive philosophy isn’t going to change. That doesn’t mean Quinn won’t make some minor tweaks at the very least before Atlanta’s upcoming matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.
