If you’ve been on our site much here, we keep telling you that this whole Big Ten fall/winter/spring football season is a very, very fluid one. And now, just a few days after hearing that the conference is looking at a Thanksgiving start date, further reports are moving that timeline up even more.
We heard from Ohio State President Kristina Johnson in an interview confirm that the Big Ten is looking at some time in the fall, and now, we’re left to wonder if it could be much earlier than any of us thought.
That’s because Dan Patrick is now telling the world that — according to a source — the Big Ten is close to communicating a Big Ten football season start on October 10. If that is, the conference can pass updated safety measures and procedures, which you would think is a mere formality.

Now, the obvious disclaimers apply here because who knows who the source is, and it’s only coming from one report right now. Also, Patrick has been on point with some things, but wrong on others — namely a vote he said was 8-6 to postpone the football season. It is now widely known that the vote was 11-3 according to information in a legal brief by the Big Ten.
Whatever this means, there’s clearly enough smoke with multiple reports circulating about the Big Ten reconsidering a start date to think there’s a real fire of momentum here.
One other thing that’s abundantly clear here too is that if there’s truth to all of this, time is of the essence. That means we should be hearing something more official soon.
