Dan Mullen whiffs on 5-Star after flying out west to visit him in offseason

It’s Groundhog Day…. again.

Coach Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators recently missed the cut for five-star outside linebacker Sav’ell Smalls, the No. 9 player in the nation for 2020.

Ironically, Mullen flew out to Washington in January, but the Gators were still left out of Smalls’ Top 6.

This thread aged particularly well, considering the Seminoles are still in the race.

Though Georgia is not in the running for Smalls, it’s still funny seeing Florida fail on multiple west-coast trips this year.

In the spring, Mullen flew out to California to visit with former Gator turned Trojan cornerback Chris Steele. The second-year Florida coach made a last-ditch effort to keep Steele in ‘The Swamp’, but the four-star prospect was already long gone.

Unless anything drastically changes, it looks like former Bulldog Brenton Cox will be the only five-star on the Gators’ roster for quite some time.

Maybe Mullen and company should try keeping their in-state recruits at home instead?
