Dan Mangan’s fourth album, Club Meds, is not one to shy away from big themes.
The title refers to our predilection for self-medication, and elsewhere the content has a political edge, even touching upon the Occupy movement on the song XVI. According to Mangan: “As I get older, I get less and less inspired by any art that isn’t inherently political in some measure. I start to wonder what is the point if you’re not saying something?”
Bolstering his singer songwriter guise with a full (and fully bearded) band, Mangan is now able to match such statements with equally bold musical backdrops. A Doll’s House Pavlovia, for instance, is reminiscent of latter day Radiohead, whereas Forgetery builds to a grand, emotional climax.
