Dan Jarvis has said he is not standing to replace Jeremy Corbyn after promising to think "long and hard" about it.
Earlier Mr Jarvis made the pledged to seriously consider a bid but said he was mindful of his promises and responsibilities he had to the Sheffield City Region where he was elected mayor in 2017.
He said: “There is a lot of faith and responsibility invested in me to be the person who gets devolution done up and working for us here - I can’t afford to fail.
“I’ll make a decision in the near future but I am extremely mindful of the duel commitment and responsibilities I have for South Yorkshire.
“I do take that very, very seriously my mayoralty is a controversial one - no one else does it like this.”
Then this afternoon in a tweet Mr Jarvis said: "I’m humbled by the messages of support, but I won’t be putting myself forward to be@UKLabour leader because of my commitment to serve as @SCR_Mayor.
"I look forward to a comradely contest & working hard to support our party back into government."
Prior to ruling himself out Mr Jarvis admitted he was torn on whether to stand as the next party leader.
He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he was "humbled and flattered" by the support he has received asking him to go for the top job.
