Dan Evans’ strong start to 2020 continues with second round win at the Adelaide International

Dan Evans continued his strong start to 2020 with a comfortable victory over Juan Ignacio Lodero in the second round of the Adelaide International.

After spearheading Britain to a quarter-final spot at the inaugural ATP Cup, Evans continued his winning ways with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over his Argentinian opponent in under an hour and a half.

Evans’ results have seen him soar up to 33rd in the world ahead of the Australian Open where he will be seeded, and he could rise higher yet with a strong showing in Adelaide, where he faces Alexander Bublik in the last round.

Evans, who picked up victories over top-20 players David Goffin and Alex de Minaur at the ATP Cup, looked in control from the outset of the contest against Lodero, breaking his rival on four occasions to wrap up another convincing ATP Tour win.

Novak Djokovic had been the top seed for Adelaide but pulled out following his ATP Cup victory while de Minaur was also a high-profile late withdrawal.

Meanwhile, in Auckland, Britain’s Cameron Norrie was knocked out in the first round of the ASB Classic after falling foul of qualifier Thiago Monteiro 7-6, 6-2.
