Daniel Evans is out of the Australian Open after a second round defeat to third seed Roger Federer.

The Briton lost in straight sets 6-7, 6-7, 3-6 after taking the former world number one to tiebreaks in the first two sets, before going down in the third and final set.

The 28-year-old performed admirably throughout, taking the 20-time Grand Slam winner to a first-set tiebreak and matched him point-for-point with a series of epic rallies.

But he squandered a 5-3 advantage in the first tiebreak, allowing Federer to win four points in a row and seal the first set.

That soon became known as the turning point, but Evans refused to give up.

The Englishman fought back from 4-2 down in the second after suffering an early break to bring about another tiebreak, but came unstuck as Federer moved up through the gears, sealing the tiebreak 7-3 with an unstoppable ace.

Despite a valiant effort in the final set, a break at 4-1 suggested Federer couldn't be caught and he surged on to claim his place in the third round.

For Evans, it marked a truly magnificent performance and one that he can use a springboard for an improved 2019 after his recent troubles.
